Shipping Container HOME Project, 2013-14 (and still, a work in progress)
This project as a whole is a simultaneous construction of a sustainable shipping container house, a documentary movie of the process, and events/happenings in and around the house. Read my artist's statement here...
I was the 2014 recipient of the Hung Liu Prize from the Mills College Visual Arts Dept. and the 2015 1st Place Winner for the National ReUse Contest awarded by The ReUse People of America for this project.
The Shipping Container HOME Project began in 2013 when I decided to build a house as part of my graduate thesis work at Mills College. The first part was the research and design, which I did in conjunction with taking a "Green Design" architecture course at UC Berkeley. At the end of 2013 I acquired a used shipping container that had been previously used as a construction office and began the process of deconstruction, reclamation, and building. I spent my last semester at Mills constructing the house on campus using reclaimed and reused materials, documenting the process, and hosting happenings and events in and around the house. Events included a full-length documentary movie screening as well as other gatherings, such as:
Front Porch Time
An invitation to gather, sit, drink sun tea, and talk about nothing in particular on the front porch of the shipping container house.
Free-style dancing outside in the driveway of the container home. Bring your iPod and headphones with your favorite grooves and we will all dance together, keeping to our own tune.
Sonic Stories of HOME
An evening of prompted storytelling inside and around the shipping container house. This is an interactive and participatory event using voice, word, and sound to find our common threads in understanding HOME.
The container house was also part of the Mills College MFA Graduate Exhibition MIXED MESSAGES at the Mills College Art Museum in May, 2014. (See documentation below)
