The Spirits of Our Ancestors

This series is comprised of 8 pinhole photographs that were taken with a large wooden pinhole camera. I made the camera as part of an interdisciplinary project at The Bauen Camp in Parkman, Wyoming while I was there as a guest artist teaching pinhole photography in the summer of 2007. There are 8 photographs in the series, with each image comprised of four 8"x10" paper negatives. Each exposure was quite a process with much room for error, from loading the paper correctly in the camera, to moving and setting up the camera and the composition, to getting the right exposure (which ended up being about 9 minutes in the sun). I printed one limited edition of the series traditionally, four 16"x20" silver gelatin prints each image contact printed in my darkroom. I then scanned each paper negative and "cleaned" them up in order to reproduce a limited edition of 17"x 22" archival pigment prints, limited in edition to 15 prints per image. The printing of the photographs in this project was partially supported by a 2008 Community Arts Assistance Program grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Illinois Arts Council.
